Photos: Filmmaker Iniabasi partner Poet Brainbox for first Nigerian spoken words documentary, I AM NOT A FAILED DREAM

Abuja-based Filmmaker and Cinematographer, Iniabasi Udosen aka Nini, together with emerging Abuja Poet, Brainbox, born Valentine Ugochukwu Ogunaka, partner to produce first ever documentary on spoken word in Nigeria, titled I AM NOT A FAILED DREAM.

The film, inspired by Brainbox, centers on the life of a young, daring poet, mirroring the struggles that come with following one's heart. Brainbox narrates, 'I treat this as my only chance in life' and expresses his confidence about professional success through spoken words poetry, an art form that has only recently started gaining attention in Nigeria, but still deemed a hobby.

In a chat session with TJ, "My aim aside creating what's to be enjoyed extends to giving the viewer insights about the emerging Nigerian spoken word industry and also getting people inspired with Brainbox's  exploits", Udosen, CEO Ifrikan Media reveals.

"I choose to work with him on the project because he has shown real commitment to his dreams. You know it takes real courage to embark on a road less traveled", added the filmmaker who is also known for Okada, the viral documentary on Abuja motorcycle riders and their travails.

Iniabasi Udosen was recently nominated for an award (Sahara Group) and the Okada documentary made it out of 200 entries. 

On if the documentary is a tell-it-all, Brainbox said: "It's just a modicum of the entire struggle but a crucial part, untold. However, there's no better time to start telling it than now that many young people easily give up on their dreams."

This was further buttressed by Udosen who claimed that the documentary was achieved on a very low budget and limited time so certain scenes and spaces for perfection were not feasible.

The film features Emerald Beauty Queen and cancer awareness Advocate, Rita Nkem Jonah, who in the first scene is conveyed by Brainbox in his cab. Other contributors includes, Ayoola Emmanuel, Beatsbyemzo, Sky, Torpedo Mascaw, Bash Amuneni, Africa Ukoh, Chrisland Schools, Dike Chukwumerije and the entire members of the Abuja Literary Society (ALS).
