TJ granted her an interview and she talks about her music background, the journey so far, marriage life, fashion style, etc.
*Tell us about your music background and why you love jazz?
I love jazz so much. I have a very jazzy background. The first kind of music I was exposed to in my life was jazz music. My dad made me listen to a lot of jazz music from the likes of John Coltrane, Ray Charles, and others. So soul and jazz are kind of intertwined.
* Why soul music? You could have done rap, hiphop, RnB....
I focused on soul music because it comes natural to me. I can do a bit of these other genres but soul music is my core. If you listen to my songs, you'll find influences from these other genres.
* What's your fashion style?
My style is very simple, but I love colours. I just love something that's different and makes the right statement. I could wear a simple piece but I like it to standout, make an impression and pass across a
message. Basically, I love fashion.
Professionally, I've been in music about four years now. Initially it wasn't easy getting the music out there. This is because my kind of music (some people call it alternative music) is very soulful, which is quite different from the usual. But lately though, I've been infusing various other genres, to give a balance. I'd say this year has been my most active musical year. It's interesting because people are keying into my style of music.
* How did you feel trying to push your kind of music in the industry?
I've always felt like I needed to work harder than any other person. Like I need to do a lot more. Not necessarily trying to dress like a pop star or look like them, but like if they're doing something with zero energy, then I'd have to give it a hundred.
* Going by the beautiful rock on your finger, you're married...?
Yes I am! (Grins)
* When did that happen?
It happened last year April and it was hush hush.
* How has the experience been since after marriage?
I am very lucky because I married someone that is super supportive. He wants me to succeed more than anything. So for me, marriage is beautiful, only if you meet the right person. It's been an amazing experience and I'm grateful for my husband!
* Do we know him? Are you keeping him away from public eye?
You don't know him, so I wouldn't have to keep him away (laughs). I probably like to keep my business really on the low. I want that aspect of my life to be really private and respected.
* What's your take on marriage and divorce?
Well I can't say it's anybody's fault, because things happen. Life happens and you move on! You can't stay in one place and cry your eyes out because it didn't work out, you have to move on and try another relationship. I don't really have much comments on that...
* How do you handle stress?
I just shut down and stay away from a lot of people. I could stay off line if the stress is so high, but only for a few days.
* Who's your celebrity crush?
Errmmm... Why do people ask these questions? Even though I'm married I still have to answer?
*Sure...!
Urrrmm... I think I like RMD! (laughs) I like Lynxxx as well. I had to say only because I had to answer the question.
* What do you do to have fun and relax?
I chill with my friends. Sometimes I go clubbing with my husband.
* What words do you have for those that want to do your kind of music?
Number one, you have to pray. You also have to make sure you work on your talent. Talent is never enough, work on your attitude, personality and don't pretend to be who you're not. Work and prayer go together.
