Music Features: Underrated roles of a manager to an artiste

Artiste managers are one set of persons that, although are well respected within the music industry by its practitioners, the audience (fan base of an artiste) generally do not really know, let alone understand the importance and how much of a back bone they are to the success of an artiste.

It is even safe to say that some artistes barely know, or do not come to the full appreciation, of how instrumental their managers are to their success.

Talented artistes can be likened to raw gold, which in itself is important and valuable, but only gain appreciation for their beauty after they are refined and designed to useable mediums. This is just about how important managers are to artistes. They are in charge of the final outlook of all that concerns an artiste.

This brings us to the first criteria artistes ought to look out for when choosing a manager. Your manager have to be able to see and believe in your talent, before they can harness and channel what you have to offer the public. In other words, your manager has to be your biggest and number one fan. He should be able to promote and defend the visions and aspiration for your career.

Once it is established that you and your manager are on the same page when it come to your visions and aspiration, then your manager quickly assumes the role of exposing your talent to the public. In this, he'll be left to decipher the right audience and market for your style of music.

He brands you, as he works with PR firms and music agencies, media and publicity, making connects in the way of monetizing your talent. This will ensure you get the right raves, gigs, tours, sponsors, endorsements, record label deals, recognition and awards, and the royalties come in as well. It will invariably mean that your manager is someone that has the right contacts and makes the right moves when necessary, which is a crucial when considering getting a manager.

In all of these processes, your manager deals with different types of personalities. It is only expedient that he has the right temperament, disposition and initiative to be able to handle what ever he faces as he comes in contact with others. These are the qualities you take into consideration before taking on a manager.

Nitty-gritty details, such as your day to day musical schedules, showing up for appointments at the appropriate time and place are responsibilities that rests on the shoulder of your manager. This would  mean that your manager should be highly functional in terms of his organisational skills and work ethics.

Giving the numerable duties and roles of an artiste manager, it is quite obvious that they are an
indispensable figure to the success of any artiste.
